Categorizing Your Activities & Awards

The UC application offers six categories for you to best describe your activities. In no ranking or order of importance, place your activities and/or accomplishments in the category that you feel best suits your shared experience.

 

Awards and honors you’ve received that mean the most to you.

Examples:
Academic, sports, state rankings, etc.

Programs or activities that enriched your academic experiences or helped you prepare for college.

Examples:
Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP); TRIO; Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID); STARS; Upward Bound; Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA); Advance Placement (AP) Readiness, etc.

These could include hobbies, clubs, sports, or anything else you feel that your application should include.

Examples:
Sports, decathlon, Science Olympiad, music lessons, church group, etc.

These are activities you’ve donated time and effort to without getting paid.

Examples:
Volunteer clubs, food drives, family responsibilities (translating, caretaking), etc.

Any paid jobs, paid experiences, or paid internships you’ve had.

Examples:
Cashier, paid intern, paid tutor, etc.

Leadership, Regional Occupational Program (ROP) courses, technical trainings, First Response training, etc.

Using Dynamic Language

To effectively describe your activities and awards in the UC application, use dynamic language. By sharing strong action verbs, and providing specific and relevant details, you showcase your accomplishments inside and outside of the classroom.
