Prospective Transfer Eligibility and Preparation

Requirements for admission are explained at the University of California Admissions page. Students who did not meet the requirements for admission as a freshman during their high school years must complete the following requirements for transfer admission, listed as items A and B below. We advise ALL applicants to complete these requirements:
  1. Complete 60 semester or 90 quarter units of transferable college credit with a grade point average of at least 2.4 for California residents and at least 2.8 for nonresidents (no more than 14 semester or 21 quarter units may be taken Pass/Not Pass).

  2. Complete the following seven-course pattern requirement, earning a grade of C or better in each:

    1. Two courses in English composition.

    2. One course in mathematics beyond intermediate algebra, such as college algebra, pre-calculus, or statistics.

    3. Four courses from among at least two of the following areas:

      • Arts and humanities

      • Behavioral and social sciences

      • Biological and physical sciences
In addition to this course pattern, students who know their intended major are encouraged to complete as much of the lower-division preparation for the major as possible. Students who have not identified a major are encouraged to take courses that meet general education requirements while researching majors and trying course work in potential major subject areas. Students attending a California community college are advised to refer to the ASSIST website for specific articulation (course equivalency and requirement satisfaction) information.

Students do not have to complete IGETC in order to be admitted to UCSB. The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is a series of courses that prospective transfer students attending California community colleges may complete to satisfy the lower-division breadth/general education requirements at both the University of California and the California State University.

Transfers into the College of Letters & Science and College of Creative Studies may use IGETC to substitute for general education requirements.

Transfers into the College of Engineering may also use IGETC to substitute for general education requirements. In addition to general education, all students in the College of Engineering are required to complete a depth requirement. Students who wish to satisfy the depth requirement prior to transfer must complete a year-long sequence in the history of world civilization, history of western civilization, history of western philosophy, or history of western art. Students may want to choose courses for IGETC that will concurrently satisfy the depth requirement. After transfer, students may also complete the depth requirement with upper division course work.

Please note: Students planning to transfer into a major in engineering, computer science, or the biological or physical sciences must be careful to complete lower division major prerequisites if they are to ensure competitiveness for admission and make normal, timely progress through the major.

If IGETC is not completed prior to transfer, or if you have not attempted IGETC, you must complete UCSB's General Education (GE) program to graduate from UCSB. It is not necessary to complete UCSB's GE prior to admission. Alternate ways to fulfill UCSB GE requirements are explained in the UCSB General Catalog.

UC Santa Barbara’s Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) program establishes criteria with all California community colleges for guaranteed admission to UCSB for fall quarters. TAG’s are available for nearly all majors at UCSB except in the College of Creative Studies and performing arts majors in the College of Letters and Science. Students should refer to the ASSIST website under articulation agreements by major between UCSB and their community college for more specific details. Students may also review our UCSB TAG information page.

Please note: Students are strongly encouraged to begin taking English composition and mathematics course work early in their academic careers. Early completion of the minimum requirements for admission makes an applicant more competitive for admission spaces available.
Also note: Grades earned in courses taken outside of the UC system are not used in the computation of the GPA at UCSB.

Selection Criteria

UCSB seeks to enroll well-prepared transfer students who clearly meet the University of California's minimum requirements for admission at the time they apply. UCSB accepts junior-level transfers and will give priority consideration to those from California community colleges. The College of Letters and Science and the College of Engineering do not accept applicants who have achieved senior-level status (applicable only for students who have attended another 4-year institution).

Frequently, the number of applications exceeds the number of enrollment spaces available. When this occurs, selection criteria beyond the minimum admission requirements are used to determine admission status.

College of Letters and Science

Students are selected primarily on the basis of overall academic achievement and completion of the course pattern required for upper division transfer. Applicants in majors other than the biological sciences and economics will be admitted to their first choice major without regard to major preparation. However, all transfer students are encouraged to complete as many of their major preparation courses as possible prior to transfer, in order to make normal progress toward completion of the degree. Some performance majors (Dance, Music B.M., and Theater B.F.A.) also require an audition.

  • All Biological Science applicants must:

  • Complete a one-year sequence of general chemistry with laboratory, with no individual grade less than "C".

  • Complete a sequence (2-3 terms) of major-applicable general biology with laboratory with no individual grade less than "C".

  • Attain a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or better in the required courses listed above.

  • For students to graduate within two years of transferring, we strongly recommend the completion of one year of organic chemistry with laboratory, one year of general physics with laboratory, and one year of calculus or calculus with statistics. Any of these courses completed with a grade lower than "C" might not satisfy course prerequisites at UCSB.

  • All Economics applicants must:

  • Complete four required major preparation courses: macroeconomics, microeconomics, and two calculus courses. (Economics and Economics & Accounting applicants may complete a statistics course in place of the second calculus course.)

  • Advanced Placement exams in Macroeconomics and Microeconomics may NOT be used to satisfy major preparation requirements.

  • Attain a grade point average of 2.75 or better in the four required major preparation courses.

  • When completing an application for admission, applicants intending to major in Economics should select an Economics major as their first choice major. Applicants who would consider studying in an alternate field and who want the greatest opportunity for selection at UCSB, should consider selecting an alternate major outside of the Economics department. Students who are not admitted to Economics may be admitted to an alternate major, but should expect to complete their degree in the major to which they were admitted.

College of Engineering

Transfer applicants are screened for the amount of preparatory course work completed, the grades earned in that course work, and the cumulative GPA. Consequently, transfer students should complete all major preparation course work available at their colleges, with the best grades possible. Applicants should have a minimum 3.40 GPA in their major preparatory courses to be competitive for admission. Applicants with a GPA between 3.00 and 3.40 will also be considered for admission, but will be less competitive than applicants with higher GPAs.

  • Computer Science B.S. major preparation:

  • Calculus for Mathematics and Engineering majors (1 year)

  • Linear Algebra

  • Differential equations

  • Programming courses in C or C++, data structures, computer organization and logic design

  • One year of calculus-based physics

  • Chemical Engineering, B.S. / Computer Engineering, B.S. / Electrical Engineering, B.S. / Mechanical Engineering, B.S. major preparation:

  • Calculus for mathematics and engineering majors (1 year)

  • Linear Algebra

  • Differential Equations

  • A year and a half of Calculus-based physics (critical to admissibility)

  • A first course in General Chemistry for science and engineering majors (full year mandatory for Chemical Engineering majors)

  • Programming in C or C++ (computer engineering and electrical engineering majors)

  • Circuits and Devices (not required for Chemical Engineering majors)

  • Course in Matlab (Chemical, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering majors)

  • Additional lower division subjects for the specified major
California community college students should refer to www.assist.org for specific coursework required to prepare for the major.

College of Creative Studies

Applicants who apply to UCSB's College of Creative Studies must fill out a supplemental application (available at www.ccs.ucsb.edu), in addition to the UC application. Applicants are selected on the basis of outstanding academic and personal achievement, special talent, and capacity for excellence in one of the following majors:

Art

Biology

Chemistry & Biochemistry

Computer Science

Literature

Mathematics

Music Composition

Physics
