International Transfer Applicants

UCSB considers you a transfer applicant if you graduated from a high school or secondary school and subsequently enrolled in a regular session at a college or university. You may not disregard your college record and apply as a freshman.

Academic Requirements

International applicants must meet the University of California subject requirements. We seek to identify students who have completed English, advanced mathematics, social science, foreign language and ab science courses during their first two years of university level. To be considered competitive for admission, your grades and exam scores must be excellent.

PLEASE NOTE: Once you submit your UC application you do not need to send other documentation until you are admitted. At that time, UCSB will request additional documents such as official transcripts.

English Language Proficiency Requirement

Applicants whose native language is not English, and whose high school or college/university education was in a country where the language of instruction was not English, must provide evidence of English proficiency to be successful in university studies.

Proficiency in English may be demonstrated by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) , with a test on the internet (minimum passing score of 80), or on a computer (minimum score 213) or as a paper-based test (minimum score 550). TOEFL test results must not be more than two years old.

Proficiency may also be demonstrated with the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam. Minimum passing score for the IELTS exam is a band score of 7.

To be considered for admission, the TOEFL or IELTS Exam must be taken by the December test date prior to enrollment. Test results must be sent directly from the testing agency to UCSB Admissions, Santa Barbara, California, 93106, USA.

Proficiency in English may also be demonstrated the following ways:

  • Attend a U.S. high school for at least three years, complete six semesters of approved English classes, earn a grade of “C” or better in these courses, and attain Grade 12 proficiency in English.
  • Complete two transferable freshman English composition courses with a grade of "C" or better at an accredited U.S. College or University.
  • Achieve a score of 3, 4 or 5 on the Advanced Placement Exam in English Language and Composition or English Literature and Composition.
  • Achieve a score of 5, 6 or 7 on the International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level examination in English (Language A).
  • Achieve a score of 6 or higher on the International Baccalaureate (IB), Standard Level examination in English (Language A).
  • Achieve a score of 560 or higher on the Writing section of the SAT Reasoning Test.
