International Freshman Applicants

UCSB considers you a freshman applicant if you have graduated from high school or secondary school and have not enrolled in a regular session at any college or university.

Academic Requirements

International applicants must meet the University of California subject requirements. To be considered competitive for admission, your grades and exam scores must be excellent.

PLEASE NOTE: Once you submit your UC application you do not need to send other documentation until you are admitted. At that time, UCSB will request additional documents such as official transcripts.

English Language Proficiency Requirement

Applicants whose native language is not English, and whose high school or college/university education was in a country where the language of instruction was not English, must provide evidence of English proficiency to be successful in university studies.

Proficiency in English may be demonstrated by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum accepted score for admission consideration for the TOEFL is 80 or better on the Internet-based test and 550 or better on the paper-based test.

Proficiency may also be demonstrated with the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam. The minimum accepted score for the IELTS is 7 or better band score (academic modules).

For admission selection, a UC campus may require a score higher than the minimum.

To be considered for admission, the TOEFL or IELTS Exam must be taken by the December test date prior to enrollment. Test results must be sent directly from the testing agency to UCSB Admissions, Santa Barbara, California, 93106, USA.

Proficiency in English may also be demonstrated the following ways:
  • Attend a U.S. high school for at least three years, complete six semesters of approved English classes, earn a grade of “C” or better in these courses, and attain Grade 12 proficiency in English.
  • Complete two transferable freshman English composition courses with a grade of "C" or better at an accredited U.S. College or University.
  • Achieve a score of 3, 4 or 5 on the Advanced Placement Exam in English Language and Composition or English Literature and Composition.
  • Achieve a score of 5, 6 or 7 on the International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level examination in English (Language A).
  • Achieve a score of 6 or higher on the International Baccalaureate (IB), Standard Level examination in English (Language A).
  • Achieve a score of 560 or higher on the Writing section of the SAT Reasoning Test.

A-Level Credit

The University of California grants credit for GCE and Hong Kong Advanced Level examinations on which a student earns a grade of A, B, or C. This credit toward graduation requirements may receive elective credit only, or specific subject credit and/or credit toward general education/breadth requirements, as determined by evaluators at each UC campus.

Units granted for A-Level exams are not counted toward the maximum number of credits required for formal declaration of a major or the maximum number of units a student may accumulate prior to graduation. Students who enter UC with A-Level credit do not have to declare a major earlier than other students, nor are they required to graduate earlier. For more information, please see the UC web page at: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/exam-credit/a-levels/index.html

Required Test Scores

All students must submit the following test scores:
  • The SAT Reasoning Test OR ACT Assessment plus Writing.
The critical reading, writing and mathematics scores on the SAT must be from the same sitting. If you take the ACT, you must report your composite score.
